Storage Doesn't Have to Be Ugly
A wall rack is an item for the home that makes organization easier and provides necessary storage. However,
it often can be one ugly accessory. Thus despite its advantages, you may notice that people avert their eyes
whenever they pass it.
But it doesn’t have to be ugly! There many high quality wall racks available in a variety of woods and finishes
that would make an elegant statement in any hall or closet. Some even come with a top shelf.
Wall racks, antique bureaus and old trunks
If a wall rack doesn’t fit the bill, you can use an antique bureau. Many an antique bureau has capacious, even
cavernous, storage where things can be hidden from view and yet easily accessible when needed. Of course, if you are only providing storage for a normally ugly area, like a garage, go right ahead and use an ugly wall rack. You’ll have plenty of company, as that seems to be the way most people organize their garages. They even have racks going up to the ceiling and use ladders to retrieve items when needed. And, of course, you certainly wouldn’t want to put a lovely bureau in a garage.
Shaker peg rails
But if you prefer a more modern décor and don’t want to spend a lot of money on contemporary furniture, even the kind that provides storage, take a look at Shaker peg rails and wall mounted coat racks. They come in every color and finish imaginable. As you know, the Shakers designed and made simple, functional styles of furniture and housewares that have stood the test of time.
Flea markets and house sales
You don’t have to spend a lot of money acquiring storage objects with style and functionality. Your solution may just be a flea market, that wonderful repository of other people’s design accessories. Or house sales of household items are also fabulous places to find remarkable storage items. Most of the items for sale in these places are very reasonably priced.
Old things you can use in new ways
Just remember to keep your eyes open for items you can repurpose. For example, a lovely jar can become a new lamp. Or an old lamp can become new again with different trimmings. An unattractive worthless painting may be housed in a lovely, and possibly valuable, picture frame, which can be kept after you throw the picture away. It has even happened that some people buy photographs of other people’s relatives, and throw away the pictures of their own less attractive relatives.
Whatever style of decoration you like, you can always find examples of home design that are attractive and reasonably priced – and also provide storage. And if you look carefully, they may not be far from home. They may even be in your home, if you don’t mind doing a little repurposing of your own stuff. For example, that old trunk that your Aunt Ella gave you can provide wonderful storage and offer you an opportunity to be creative with decoupage or paint. Just keep your eyes open -- you may be surprised at what you find.
